    Patriotic Fruit Kabobs

Easy fruit skewers are the perfect healthy finger food in the summer. These 4th of July themed kabobs are so festive for all the summer holidays.

Whether you are bringing a side dish to a BBQ with friends, brunch with family or a picnic, this patriotic treat will be devoured. Kids and adults both love them!

You probably don't need a recipe for these fruit kabobs, but we have some tips below and a printable recipe card to remind yourself about this fun holiday snack!

Another healthy side dish that is perfect for parties is our Fresh Hummus served with your favorite veggies!

In the summer we also love serving Easy Homemade Fried Funnel Cake. The toppings are endless!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • In the summer fresh, sweet fruit can be served as a side dish or a healthy dessert.
    • Red, white and blue desserts and snacks are so fun for summer parties and patriotic holidays.
    • These festive summer fruit skewers can be made ahead which makes party prep easier!

    Recipe Ingredients

You'll need the following ingredients to make red and blue fruit kabobs for your next potluck!

Watermelon: A seedless watermelon is best for this recipe. Finding a watermelon with a very yellow patch where it laid on the ground should be sweeter than one that has a white spot.

Blueberries: Try to find blueberries that are large and plump.

Wooden Skewers: Although bamboo skewers are not an ingredient, it is an important part in the assembly.

    Recipe Tips & Tricks

    • Don't cut the watermelon too thin. The stars will break when you put the wooden skewers through them.
    • Don't cut the watermelon too thick. It will be difficult to get the star cookie cutter through the slice of watermelon.
    • Need a star cookie cutter? You can snag one here: Wilton Star Cookie Cutters . Or you can use a melon baller or small cookie scoop to just make round watermelon balls.
    • If you have kids at home have them help assemble the kabobs.

    Storage

    • Storage: If you're finding yourself busy during the holidays you can assemble them the day before and store them in the fridge.
    • Freezing: These do not freeze well.

    Additions and Substitutions

You can easily substitute other red, white and blue fruits and foods on these easy patriotic fruit kabobs.

    • Red Foods: watermelon, strawberries, raspberries and cherries.
    • Blue Foods: blueberries and blackberries.
    • White Foods: Golden honeydew, bananas, angel food cake, pound cake or marshmallows. Note: Bananas will begin to brown from oxidation, dipping the cut bananas in water and lemon may help reduce that.

    Variations

Make these into dessert fruit skewers by adding the following items!

    • Fruit Dip - This simple marshmallow and cream cheese fruit dip can be served on the side.
    • Chocolate Drizzle - if you substitute the watermelon for strawberries you can drizzle melted chocolate over each skewer and refrigerate to harden the chocolate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make fruit kabobs the night before?

Fruit kabobs can be made the night before, covered and stored in the refrigerator. Some fruit like bananas will brown and should not be assembled the night before.

Do you soak skewers for fruit kabobs?

You do not need to soak wooden skewers before assembling fruit kabobs. Soaking skewers is usually done before using them on the grill.

How much fruit do you need for kabobs?

The answer to this will vary based on how large you cut the fruit, what types of fruit you are using and how long the wooden skewers are.

    Equipment

    • 1 star cookie cutter

    Ingredients

    • 1 medium seedless watermelon
    • 1-2 pints large blueberries

    Instructions

    • Use a large knife to cut the watermelon in half. Put the cut side down on the cutting board and use the knife to cut away all the green/white rind(video in above post). You will be left with a half of a pink/red watermelon.
    • Carefully slice the watermelon into ¾ inch slices.
    • Use a small star cookie cutter to cut out stars. Keep the leftover pieces from cutting out the stars to snack on.
    • Repeat on the other half of the watermelon.
    • Use small wooden skewers to make a watermelon star and blueberry pattern. Store in the fridge.

    Notes

    Tips:
    • Don't cut the watermelon too thin. The stars will break when you put the wooden skewers through them.
    • Don't cut the watermelon too thick. It will be difficult to get the star cookie cutter through the slice of watermelon.
Storage: These can be assembled the day before and stored covered in the refrigerator.
