Recipe Tips & Tricks
There are a few things that will ensure that the Tiktok Velveeta mac and cheese recipe comes out right!
- Make sure you wait to add the shredded sharp cheddar cheese at the end. When cheddar gets too hot it can get gritty. (I tried this during my testing phase of this recipe)
- If you find that your pasta isn't soft enough after 45 minutes, first check if you need more liquid. You can add ½ or 1 cup of heavy cream or milk and then cover and return it to the oven for 15 minutes (cooking time may vary based on your brand of elbow pasta).
Storage and Reheating
- Storage: After cooling to room temperature, store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag for 3-4 days.
- Reheating: You can reheat in the microwave, over, or on the stovetop. Add 1 tablespoon of milk for each cup of macaroni to bring back the creaminess.
- Freezing: After cooling to room temperature, store in an airtight container or flat in a Ziploc bag for up to 2 months.
Substitutions
- American cheese can replace Velveeta cheese.
- Half and half can be used as a replacement for heavy cream.
- You can use mild cheddar instead of sharp, but it will have slightly less flavor.
- White cheddar cheese can be used instead of the classic yellow shredded cheese.
Variations
Make this Tiktok mac and cheese hack even better with these tastiest options!
- Crunchy Topping - Mix some melted butter and panko bread crumbs and spread it on top of the finished mac and cheese. Turn the oven on a low broil and put it back in the oven for 1-2 minutes to toast the panko. Keep a close eye on it!
- Garlic & Herb - Add minced fresh garlic and thyme.
- Meat Lovers - Rotisserie chicken, bacon, or ground beef can add some meat to this basic mac.
- Different Type of Cheese - Try mozzarella cheese, white cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese, etc.
- Spicy - Add some red pepper flakes for some flavor and a nice kick.
- Gouda - Add ½ cup of Gouda to add a rich and nuttiness or try this Dutch Oven Mac and Cheese which has tons of flavor.

The heavy cream, butter, and water help this creamy mac keep its cream. After refrigerating it, add 1 tablespoon of milk per cup of macaroni to bring back the creaminess.
It could be the additives in many processed cheeses. Using fresh cheese can help reduce the grittiness of mac and cheese. Another problem may be overheating the cheese. That shouldn't be a problem in this viral TikTok mac and cheese recipe.

Jen Talley says

Jen Talley says
If you found it too thick, you can add a little cream or milk to thin it out. When I reheat it the next day I always have to add a little milk to thin out the sauce.
Jessica says
Has anyone tried to double the recipe in a foil pan at all? Would you make any adjustments?
Jen Talley says
Hi Jessica. Just remember that the pasta expands once it absorbs the liquid. So give it plenty of room to grow. Also, depending on the brand of pasta, you may need a little more/less liquid. I would start with the recommended amounts, but once it bakes, give it a mix and see if it needs more. Then you may need to put it back in the oven. Let me know if you have any questions.
Brenda DeFoor says
I should have cooked it in a corning ware pan or glass one cause it got stuck in the pan I had to throw about a third of it away but the leftover the next day was excellent So I'm going to try making it again with proper pan

Jen Talley says
I'm glad it was delicious. You could also try rubbing some softened butter all over the bottom of the pan.
Dobie says
Can it be cut in half?
This is way too much for us.
Jen Talley says
Yes, it can be cut in half!
Gina says
Could this be made in a crockpot?
Jen Talley says
I have never tried to cook it in a crockpot. However, I do think it is possible. It sounds like it takes about 2 hours to cook pasta in a crockpot on low, but that time will vary based on the type of pasta and even brand of pasta. You will have to be careful to make sure the pasta is cooked, but not mushy. Let me know if you give it a try!
Rachel says
Besides adding some extra milk, what are the reheating instructions if I’m planning to make this ahead of time? Should I hold off on adding the cheddar cheese until I reheat before serving?
Kristen McCarty says
Do you double liquid amounts if you use two boxes of pasta?
Jen Talley says
Yes, you will need to double the amount of liquid. Also, make sure you use a very large baking dish. This recipe fills a 9x13 baking dish.
Missy Missy Gross says
Was easy and delicious!
Starr says
Can you use milk vs heavy cream?
Jen Talley says
Hi Starr! I haven't tried it with milk before, so I am not sure. Let me know if you give it a try!
