How to Save Money on Fresh Ingredients
Fresh ingredients can be expensive at the grocery store. Here are a few tips to help you save money and still make delicious smoothie recipes.
Buy What is in Season
In the spring strawberries will go on sale for as low as $1 a pound. In the winter that same pound is about $5. When strawberries are on sale, I will buy up to 16 pounds of strawberries. We eat 1-2 pounds fresh, then the rest are either washed, de-stemmed, and frozen or made into jam. Those 16 pounds cost me $16 vs. $80. That is a huge savings. So, keep an eye on those grocery store sale ads! In addition, the fruit is usually more flavorful and sweet when bought in season.
Freeze it Before it Gets Rotten
Maybe your family is sick of fresh blueberries. Instead of letting them sit on your fridge until they grow mold, freeze them so they can be used in smoothies, pancakes, or muffins.
Sometimes Frozen is Better
In the winter, when fruit prices tend to be more expensive it may be cheaper to buy your fruit already frozen. Costco and Sam's club are great options for frozen fruit. Compare the prices with the fresh fruit at your grocery store.
Co-Ops or Farms
Some places have co-ops that allow you to buy fresh fruit for cheaper than the grocery store. Reach out to neighbors and see if they know anything about any local co-ops. Also, are there any local farms that offer fruit at a great price? Sometimes you can even pick it yourself.
Plant a Garden
Although not all people have access to land at their homes, some fruits such as strawberries can grow really well in pots. The first year you may only get a few strawberries, but each year after they will continue to multiply and produce more fruit. We planted raspberries and the first summer we got 2-3 raspberries a day. The next summer we were getting 10-15 raspberries a day. So although it is a bit of an investment, long term it can pay off. You can also reach out to neighbors or community pages and ask if anyone is thinning out their strawberry or raspberry plants. You may be able to get free plants.
Ask Neighbors About their Fruit Trees
Trees can produce so much fruit that one family may not be able to harvest and use all of it. It will fall on the ground and create a big sticky mess. Some neighbors are relieved to get help picking fruit from their prosperous trees. Peaches, pears, and cherries are great to freeze for smoothies.
Recipe Ingredients
You'll need the following ingredients to make a smoothie recipe without yogurt and without banana.

Unsweetened Plain Almond Milk, your favorite dairy-free milk, regular milk, or even fruit juice will work in this smoothie.
Fresh Strawberries or frozen strawberries add a sweet taste to the smoothie.
Fresh or Frozen Pineapple has a tropical flavor and a lot of natural sweetness.
Fresh or Frozen Peaches add a little peach flavor to the fruit smoothie.

Recipe Tips & Tricks
- A good blender can make a big difference in a smooth and creamy smoothie. If you make smoothies often, you may want to consider purchasing a Vitamix Blender. I have had mine for about 15 years and it is still working great!
- Add fresh fruit to the bottom of the blender and the frozen fruit and ice on top. It will help the smoothie to blend easier.
Storage and Reheating
- Storage: Store the smoothie in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. However, for best results drink it immediately.
- Freezing: I highly recommend freezing any leftover smoothie into smoothie popsicles. You can find a popsicle mold on Amazon and then have a refreshing healthy treat anytime you'd like. Smoothie popsicles will last up to 3 months in the freezer. It is a great healthy alternative to ice cream.
Substitutions
- Try substituting your favorite fruit for one of the fruits listed in the recipe.
- Other Plant-Based milk can be substituted for almond milk. Try using Oat Milk, Coconut Milk, Soy Milk or cashew milk. These are great alternatives to cow's milk to make dairy-free smoothies. It will also be a vegan smoothie.
- Regular dairy milk can also be used in place of almond milk. Really any milk of choice will work. I have used whole milk in this recipe before. If using low-fat milk it will be a little less creamy.
- Greek Yogurt can also be used to replace the almond milk. It will give it a creamy consistency.
- Peanut butter or cashew butter can replace the almond butter as a source of protein in the smoothie. It will alter the taste a little, but it is still delicious.
- Fruit juices can replace the almond milk as well. It will give the smoothie a sweeter taste, but also some added sugar. Mango juice, peach juice, guava juice are all really delicious in the smoothie.
