One of my favorite ways to make a burger is on a charcoal grill, but whether you use a gas grill, a stovetop, or an air fryer, you are about to enjoy the best homemade burgers!

Try adding homemade Burger Seasoning for a little extra flavor and serve it with Sautéed Green Beans or Air Fryer Potato Puffs.

    Recipe Ingredients

You'll need the following ingredients to make this easy hamburger recipe without breadcrumbs.

The ingredients to make simple burgers without breadcrumbs.

Fresh Lean Ground Beef is the start of this perfect burger.

Salt brings out the flavor in all of the other ingredients.

Black Pepper brings a classic flavor along with a little bit of heat.

Onion Powder while optional, this extra flavor makes a big difference.

Garlic Powder is also optional, but it brings a great umami flavor to this easy recipe.

How to Make A Simple Burger Recipe Without Breadcrumbs

Here are some quick visual instructions. The full recipe with ingredient measurements is below!

Mix all of the seasonings in a small bowl.

Portion the lean beef into four equal portions. Make sure not to overwork the ground meat to keep the meat tender (see video in recipe card). Sprinkle the seasoning onto the patties.

Turn the stove to medium heat and leave the frying pan or cast iron skillet until it is hot. Put the homemade hamburger patties onto the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes.

    GRILL DIRECTIONS

Preheat the grill on high heat. Once it is very hot, turn it to low and lay burgers on the hot grill. Let the burger cook for 4-5 minutes on low to medium-low. Flip the homemade burger patties and cook them for 3-4 minutes. Check the internal temperature with an instant-read thermometer and add extra time if needed.

    AIR FRYER DIRECTIONS

These burgers can be made as Air Fryer Burgers as well!

    Recipe Tips & Tricks

    • Using fresh meat (not frozen) and keeping it cold can help the burgers to stay together. After shaping the patties (see video in recipe card), you can put them on a large plate or cookie sheet, cover them with plastic wrap and allow them to chill for 20 minutes. Consider putting wax paper or parchment paper between the plate or baking sheet and the burgers.
    • When grilling burgers, the fat can fall to the burners and cause "flare-ups" of the flame. To avoid getting a charred burger, heat the grill on high, then reduce it to low once you add the burgers.
    • Be sure to check the center of each patty for doneness with a meat thermometer, especially when cooking thick patties.
    • Handling the meat too much can lead to a dry burger. The best way to avoid that is to handle the meat as little as possible.

    Storage and Reheating

    • Storage: If you have leftover burgers, refrigerate them for three or four days. Store them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag after they have cooled.
    • Reheating: To reheat the burger, heat it in the microwave, the oven, or a frying pan or cast-iron skillet. When reheating, make sure to check that the internal temperature gets back up to 160 degrees F.
    • Freezing: Before Cooking: Form the patties, put parchment or wax paper between each patty. Then stack them up, tightly cover them with plastic wrap, and put them in a freezer bag (try to get out as much as air as possible). Then defrost them and cook them when ready. After Cooking: Make sure the burgers cool first. Wrap them individually in aluminum foil or plastic wrap and then store them in a freezer bag.

    Substitutions

    • Ground Beef, Ground Chuck, and Ground Round can all be used interchangeably.
    • A veggie burger, ground turkey, or premade turkey burgers can also be used if desired.

    Variations

Try some different ways to make this simple hamburger patty recipe with no breadcrumbs more exciting!

    • Swiss and Mushroom Burgers: Sauté or grill some mushrooms while the burgers cook and add them on top. Then, top each patty with swiss cheese and allow it to melt over the mushrooms and juicy burger.
    • Avocado Bacon Burgers: Slice up some avocado and fry up some bacon to serve along with your burgers.
    • Hawaiian Burgers: Grilled pineapple is hard to beat! Grill up some pineapple along with your good juicy burgers and top with teriyaki sauce.
    • Spicy Burgers: Add some cayenne pepper to the spices before sprinkling it on your burgers.
    • Savory Burger: To add a little more umami flavor, try mixing Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce in with the meat. Be careful about overmixing.

    Equipment

    • 1 large skillet or cast iron pan (or)
    • 1 grill

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound lean ground beef
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

    Instructions

    • Mix the salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder in a small bowl.
    • Separate the ground beef into 4 equal amounts. Without overworking the ground meet, gently form 4 patties (see video).
    • Sprinkle each patty with the spice mixture.
    • Stove Top Directions: Turn the heat to medium until the pan is hot. Add the burger patties to the hot pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes, flip the burgers, and cook another 3-4 minutes. You can also cover the pan with a lid if you want the inside to be well done.
Grill Directions: Preheat the grill on high heat. Once it is super hot, turn it to low and add the burgers. Grill the burgers on low to medium/low. That fat from the burgers may cause "flare-ups" on the grill so keep the heat low and keep your eye on them. Cook for 4-5 minutes, flip the burgers, and cook an additional 3-4 minutes until they reach the desired doneness.
    • Serve the burgers warm with your favorite toppings such as cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mayo, and mustard.

Simple is often best and that's the case here. I think getting the best quality meat is what really affects the flavor, so keeping the rest simple is the way to go.
